The portrayal of King Ghezo by John Boyega, who governed the Kingdom of Dahomey from 1818 until 1859, also reaches new heights. While Thuso Mbedu's portrayal of the fresh Agojie recruits Nawi signals a promising future for The Underground Railroad actress, Lashana Lynch's portrayal of the strong and endearing warrior Izogie is unforgettable.
The Woman King's choreography also defies adequate description. Swordfights, training exercises, extravagant entrances, and ritualistic dances improve the worldbuilding of the movie and give the pacing a rhythmic, fevered drive.
The Woman King's portrayal of a long-overlooked period of history in all its Hollywood splendor is fundamental to why it is so intriguing.
Historical blockbusters can be effective tools for promoting both greater education and amusement. Before Mel Gibson's Braveheart, I don't believe I had heard of William Wallace, and Ridley Scott's historical epic Gladiator was crucial in igniting my interest in Roman history.
There will be similar, if not more fervent responses to The Woman King. It addresses past wrongs that still exist today and exudes all the swashbuckling passion and grandeur of a great Hollywood production.
The Woman King, like most movies of its kind, has a lot of historical errors. The Woman King pushes the rules in a number of ways that could cause it to age as terribly as Gladiator and Braveheart. Of course, anyone wanting complete truth from the drama realms of Hollywood is best off searching elsewhere.
Today, it's pretty difficult to watch those two movies due to problematic characters, cartoonish machismo, or just melodramatic writing. They can't be trusted to give you the sensation of being completely engulfed in a historical epic. It's a sensation that people crave but is much more difficult to achieve as they age.
The characters in Gladiator today are likely to bore anyone viewing them. Roman history is also misrepresented in the movie. For starters, the ending depicts Maximus restoring Rome as a republic—something that was never done.
Marcus Aurelias didn't intend to rebuild it and he didn't forbid gladiatorial combat either. More issues exist with Braveheart. One reason is that violence is unnecessary. Wallace's execution's climactic climax was also stretched out and tinged with melodrama and sadism. There were a lot of improper rewrites as well.
The Woman King makes its fair share of historical errors as well. The movie has recently come under fire for elevating the women fighters while downplaying the Dahomey tribe's participation in the slave trade. Even a hashtag advocating for the boycott of the movie was developed.
Nevertheless, the movie is just as rousing and expansive enough to merit the moniker of a historical epic, and it is one of the greatest to come out of Hollywood in a while. However, as it stands, errors limit it and could cut short its time in the spotlight. Even while longevity may not be its destiny, it has had some rather remarkable effects so far, such as igniting debate on the previously unresearched history of Dahomey and other African kingdoms.
We'll have to wait and see how these accusations affect The Woman King's reputation, but Gladiator and Braveheart have also been subject to concerns about unnecessary historical revisionism and poor casting, and both movies already appear as dated as the eras they depict.
